Although currently liveried as the car used by
James Thompson in the
1995 British Touring Car Championship, there is some debate as to whether he actually raced it. Thompson's regular race car was
chassis 028 which was destroyed during a mid-season testing accident at Knockhill.
Chassis 023 is believed to be the team's spare car which was called into service following the accident. With Thompson unable to continue racing
Jeff Allam was called in as a last minute replacement for the Knockhill round with
Michael Briggs taking over for the remainder of the season.
At the end of the season it was purchased along with the sister car (
chassis 022) by
Jim Richards and shipped to Australia.
Both cars were later acquired by
Bob Tweedie before being purchased in 2000 by
Mike Newton and returned to the UK.
Following a lengthy rebuild the car returned to competition at the
2008 Goodwood Festival of Speed in the hands of
John Cleland. Running in period livery, the car was widely reported as being Cleland's 1995 Championship winning car but in fact that was sister car -
chassis 022. Sadly the practice run ended early when Cleland under-steered off the road, badly damaging the front of the car.
